چکیده

The current understanding of astrophysical magnetic fields is reviewed with particular emphasis on nonlinear dynamo theory. Analytic and numerical results are discussed both for small scale dynamos, where helicity is unimportant, and for large scale dynamos, where kinetic helicity is crucial. Large scale dynamos produce small scale magnetic helicity as a waste product that quenches the large scale dynamo process (alpha effect). With this in mind, the microscopic theory of the alpha effect is revisited in full detail and new results for current helicity fluxes are presented.

Spectra and Growth Rates of Fluctuating Magnetic Fields in the Kinematic Dynamo Theory with Large Magnetic Prandtl Numbers

The existence of a weak galactic magnetic field has been repeatedly confirmed by observational data. The origin of this field has not as yet been explained in a fully satisfactory way and represents one of the main challenges of the astrophysical dynamo theory. In both the galactic dynamo theory and the primordial-origin theory, a major influence is exerted by the small-scale magnetic fluctuati...

Problems and Progress in Astrophysical Dynamos

Astrophysical objects with negligible resistivity are often threaded by large scale magnetic fields. The generation of these fields is somewhat mysterious, since a magnetic field in a perfectly conducting fluid cannot change the flux threading a fluid element, or the field topology. Classical dynamo theory evades this limit by assuming that magnetic reconnection is fast, even for vanishing resi...

Back Reaction to the Spectrum of Magnetic Field in the Kinetic Dynamo Theory —

We take account of the lowest order back reaction on the fluid and modify the Kulsrud and Anderson equation ∂tEM = 2γEM obtained in the kinetic dynamo theory, where EM is the energy density of the magnetic field. Furthermore, we apply our present result to some astrophysical stages where the magnetic field is expected to be amplified by the dynamo mechanism. JSPS Postdoctal Fellowship for Resea...

A Taylor-Couette Dynamo

Recent experiments have shown that it is possible to study a fundamental astrophysical process such as dynamo action in controlled laboratory conditions using simple MHD flows. In this paper we explore the possibility that Taylor-Couette flow, already proposed as a model of the magneto-rotational instability of accretion discs, can sustain generation of magnetic field. Firstly, by solving the k...

In Situ Origin of Large Scale Galactic Magnetic Fields without Kinetic Helicity?

The origin and sustenance of large scale galactic magnetic fields has been a long standing and controversial astrophysical problem. Here an alternative to the “standard” α−Ω mean field dynamo and primordial theories is pursued. The steady supply of supernovae induced turbulence exponentiates the total field energy, providing a significant seed mean field that can be linearly stretched by shear....
